ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Erik Gonzales, American, born 1973 was raised in Colorado and Connecticut. In 1990 he moved to Arizona and attended Arizona State University. He studied in Madrid in 1995 obtaining a second degree in Spanish Studies. After returning from Spain he moved to Phoenix where he currently lives and works. His time is spent working at his Phoenix studio and traveling throughout Europe with his wife.

His family’s Spanish background has had a profound influence on his work creating a dichotomy of new and old. On his paternal side the family history can be traced back to 1564 in Northern Spain and Southern France. His maternal family has its roots in Andalusia and came to the United States with a land grant from the King of Spain. The analytical side of his work can be traced to his father whose pioneering career as a nuclear pharmacist introduced the artist to the world of science at an early age. The deep textures and bold use of color represents his mother’s Andalusian background and continues to influence his use of mystical imagery.

ARTIST STATEMENT:

Through painting I create tactile expressions of my mind and soul that have a solid permanence much like the stelae of ancient cultures. The paintings become more tableau-like than simply paint on canvas with the use of unconventional materials that give weight to the works. By exploring new materials a process of experimentation follows that often takes center stage in my paintings. Images and symbols mix and coalesce with colors and textures to show the paintings’ history. Layer after layer is built up and then often removed to expose what once lay beneath. Much of the source imagery and inspiration for` my work comes from traveling abroad and new developments in modern science. Organic structures exist within orderly grids representing the complexities of civilization and the hidden order of things within nature. As in nature there exists a controlled chaos within my work that pushes the limits of both artist and materials. Often I utilize an economy of color together with rich dried pigments to create visual allegories of time and myth. My heavier grounds of red clay and powdered marble reflect weathered desert floors and old, time worn walls upon which our history is painted and etched while my canvases have the appearance of inscribed ancient parchments.
